Q - How often do I need to have my pool or spa barriers inspected?

You are required to have your safety barriers inspected every 4 years. Refer to your local council for exact dates.

Q - What happens if your pool barriers are non compliant?
If your barriers are non-compliant, you will be issued a notice/ report that details all of the non-compliant issues that need rectification. You then receive 60 days to fix these issues, ready for your second inspection.
Q - Can I have a pool/spa without a fence in Victoria?
No, laws in Victoria now require all pool and spa owners to have a valid certificate of pool barrier compliance.
Q - What are some basic things I need to pass compliance?
Australian Standards are different depending on when your pool was constructed, but basics are to have a clear space on the approach side of your barrier, removing anything that can be used as a step to achieve entry into you pool area. All pools must have a barrier of at least 1200mm in height. The maximum gap under the fence must not be bigger than 100mm from finished ground level.

Yes, all spas and swim spas in Victoria need a pool safety barrier. In short, a lockable hardcover is not considered to be a suitable barrier in Victoria.
Q - What is a foot hold?
Under the Australian Standard, a horizontal surface of 10mm or greater is considered a foot/ hand hold and enable climbing.
Q - What is an NCZ?
This is called a “Non-Climbable Zone”. The NCZ is measured in an arc shape from the top of the barrier, upwards and towards the ground. This is a clear space which should remain clear.
